Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar… in Washington.
Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.
Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart
Contemporary Adult Romance
Death of a loved one.
This is Tessa Bailey at her absolute best. It Happened one Summer is the perfect beach read. Funny, charming, sexy, and heartfelt, it has all the ingredients that make this a delightful book.
Piper Bellinger is going through yet another breakup. She keeps having lighting-fast relationships with Hollywood playboys and is feeling so generic she can’t separate who she is from her plastic public persona. She is an internet sensation and famous socialite, but besides her sister Hannah she can’t rely on anyone.
After landing herself in jail after a wild night her stepfather sentences her to go back to her hometown and connect with her roots. Her dad was a crab fisherman, but after his death many years ago her mother (and consequently Piper and Hannah) never visited Westport, Washington again. Now the two sisters must stay there for three months and work on their late father’s bar.
It Happened on Summer triumphs because it manages to deliver a story that is equal parts light rom-com, steamy contemporary, and earnest small-town romance. All characters have a multitude of layers.
Piper easily sheds her socialite persona and becomes this endearing protagonist, dead set in charming Westport and honoring her late father’s memory.
Brendan, the love interest, is a classic grump to Piper’s sunshine. But, he is willing to listen, learn and observe. He compliments her and understands that changes can be a very good thing.
And Westport itself has an amalgam of characters that each shine on their own.
In the end, I was so completely charmed by this book. And Tessa even sprinkles tidbits about Hannah (Piper’s sister) and Fox (Brendan’s best friend) and I was so intrigued that I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
